A Splitwise alternative that's free and unlimited
How FairSettle compares with Splitwise: free with no limits, weighted splitting, payment plans between two people, CSV import.
Updated Friday, October 9
Splitwise is the app most people already know for splitting expenses, and for plenty of groups it does the job. FairSettle is for the ones who run into a wall: the free plan’s limits, or the fact that there is no real way to track a debt that lasts months rather than days. Here they are side by side. Splitwise’s prices and limits change, so check their pricing page rather than take our word for what they charge today.

What you give up
Splitwise has been around for well over a decade, has integrations FairSettle doesn’t, and your friends may already be on it. FairSettle is built and run by one person. If a long track record or a big ecosystem is what you need, stay.
What you get
No limits. Add as many expenses, groups and members as you like, any day. Nothing is rationed, the export is not behind a paywall, and there are no ads.
Debts that outlast the trip. When a balance turns into “I’ll pay you back over the year”, make it a plan with a schedule and a rate. If you want the amount to hold its value, index it to gold, a currency or the consumer price index.
Both people see the same ledger. Every recalculation, rate and payment is a line, so there is nothing to reconstruct from memory six months later.
Moving over
Export your data from Splitwise as CSV, open FairSettle, choose import and pick the file. The group, its members, its expenses and its payments come across; members without an account show up by name. When one of them opens the group’s link, they pick their name from the list and the expenses and payments under it become theirs. A FairSettle group keeps one currency; rows in any other currency are converted into it at the rate of the day they happened.
